Suspect in carjacked vehicle nabbed with help of Sheriff’s helicopter in Danville
DANVILLE – A suspect driving a carjacked vehicle is in custody following a vehicle pursuit on a dead end road in Danville.
At around 11:00 am Friday, Danville Police were notified of the presence of a stolen vehicle in the area of Diablo Road.
Shortly after, a police sergeant spotted the vehicle on Diablo Road before it turned south on McCauley Road. At around the same time, a Contra Costa Sheriff’s helicopter spotted the vehicle.
When officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, it accelerated to high speeds toward the dead end of McCauley Road. The vehicle crashed through a perimeter gate at the dead end and continued to drive on a dirt road until it came to rest approximately 200 feet from the paved roadway. The suspect then exited the vehicle and continued to flee on foot up a hill.
For around 5 minutes, the helicopter directed officers to the suspect’s location as he removed his shirt and entered a nearby pond before continuing up the hill.
The suspect was taken into custody when he stopped fleeing due to exhaustion.
After being taken into custody, the suspect declared he was unable to breath and was experiencing a medical emergency. A paramedic inside the helicopter was deployed to the ground and began treating the patient for exhaustion.
The patient was walked down the hill, placed inside an ambulance and was transported to San Ramon Regional Medical Center, accompanied by a police escort.
Police have identified the suspect as Tone Moa, a 22-year-old Oakland resident. He is facing felony eluding charges, but police say more charges may be filed after an investigation.
The vehicle, described as a 2016 Honda HRV, had been reported stolen after it was taken during a carjacking in Hayward, CA.
