Fatal Early Morning Big Rig Accident in Danville Leaves Packages, Traffic In Its Wake
DANVILLE – A fatal early morning big rig accident on I-680 in Danville left packages across lanes of I-680 and a traffic jam that lasted for miles.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were dispatched to a report of a collision on southbound I-680 at El Pintado Road at 3:24 am.
A big rig carrying packages reportedly struck an abandoned vehicle on the right shoulder before striking a large metal pole and overturning across the freeway, causing its contents to spill across the roadway.
The driver, a 26 year old man from Sacramento, was transported to a local hospital in Walnut Creek before succumbing to his injuries.
CHP says it remains unclear why the driver allowed the truck to veer to the right and collide with the abandoned minivan parked within the right shoulder, but alcohol and drugs don;t appear to be a factor in the crash.
The accident left packages spilled across lanes of I-680 and traffic remained backed up in the southbound direction to Walnut Creek Monday morning.
