San Ramon man dies after Saturday arrest
MARTINEZ – A San Ramon man died in a holding cell at the Martinez Detention Facility following his arrest, according to authorities.
At around 11:30 am Saturday morning, San Ramon Police responded to a residence on Campechi Court after a citizen associated with the suspect reported that the individual was throwing shoes inside the residence.
Officers arrived and located the suspect on a trail near the residence. He was evaluated by paramedics before he was transported to the hospital by police, then to the Martinez Detention Facility.
According to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jimmy Lee, at around 11:27 pm Saturday, deputies in the intake area of the detention facility were alerted to a medical emergency in a holding room.
They located an inmate who was unresponsive and called for medical personnel to respond. Staff performed CPR on the inmate until paramedics arrived, but the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The inmate is identified as 26-year-old Karthik Kandaswamy of San Ramon. He had been arrested by San Ramon Police for battery and resisting arrest.
The Sheriff’s Office and the District Attorney’s Office are investigating.
