Stolen vehicle suspect leads police on chase through Danville, San Ramon, Crow Canyon before carjacking a vehicle
HAYWARD – A suspect is in custody following an erratic police chase that lasted nearly 45 minutes through multiple counties, including the Danville/ San Ramon area.
According to Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Jimmy Lee, Lafayette Police officers were investigating a possible stolen vehicle at 1600 Palos Verde Mall in the City of Walnut Creek.
At around 11:47 am, the suspect spotted officers and fled, leading them on a pursuit that continued on southbound I-680, Lee said.
The vehicle exited the freeway on El Pintado Road in Danville, where officers from Lafayette PD, Walnut Creek PD, and Danville PD established a perimeter after they lost sight of the vehicle in downtown Danville.
Lee said a deputy soon spotted the vehicle on southbound San Ramon Valley Boulevard in Danville where officers re-engaged the pursuit before handing it off to San Ramon Police.
As the vehicle entered the Crow Canyon, all officers terminated the pursuit while CHP’s aircraft monitored the suspects movements and coordinated with officers on the other side of the canyon.
CHP Castro Valley re-engaged the pursuit at the west end of the canyon before terminating due to the suspect’s erratic driving.
A CHP aircraft, along with multiple news helicopters were monitoring the chase when the suspect collided with and ultimately carjacked a white BMW, ordering the driver of the BMW to drive while the suspect sat in the passenger seat.
The suspect was taken into custody by Hayward Police moments later.
Speeds reportedly topped 90 mph on I-680 and 80 mph on San Ramon Valley Blvd during the chase.
