Stolen vehicle totaled after crash during a high speed pursuit in Danville
DANVILLE – A Saturday afternoon pursuit of a stolen vehicle resulted in a crash and caused road closures after the suspect collided with a curb on Camino Tassajara.
Just before 3:00 pm Saturday, Danville Police were notified of that white 1998 Nissan Maxima listed stolen from Oakland was seen driving east Camino Tassajara, near Blackhawk Police Chief Allan Shields said.
Shortly after, an officer spotted the vehicle traveling westbound on Camino Tassajara near Woodranch Cir. The officer signaled for the vehicle to stop, but it began to flee and accelerated to 100 mph.
Police gave chase until the vehicle collided with a median on Camino Tassajara near Messian Place before coming to rest in the eastbound lanes. The suspect, who police later learned also had a warrant for his arrest, fled across westbound lanes on foot before being captured by officers.
Paramedics were dispatched to the scene to treat the suspect, who sustained minor injuries. No other individuals were injured as a result of the collision.
The collision carried enough force that it reportedly severed a portion of the vehicle. The suspect was transported to a local hospital before being transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
The suspect is identified as 49-year-old Christopher Hurst of Milpitas. He is charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of stolen property and possession of a controlled substance, Shields said.
Police closed Camino Tassajara near Sycamore Valley Road while they investigate the collision. The road reopened at 6:50 pm.
A passing citizen was also detained by officers after he entered an area cordoned off by police tape. He was cited.
